Civil War Era China Lady Doll. H. 13”.

High Brow or high forehead style. Provenance is written on a paper tag, which reads: Bought of Mrs. R. D. Higgins Antiques, 1105 Bath Avenue, Ashland Kentucky. November 9, 1937. Reverse of tag reads: Bought first in 1842, later bought for Jane Higgins, all clothes made by first owner.

Black glazed curly molded hair. A couple white rub marks on the back of her head. Deep white shoulder plate, the face with hand painted blue eyes with red lid line, and heart shaped mouth. There is a small back dot on her nose tip. She has china upper arms and hands, and china upper legs ending in flat black painted shoes. She has a beautiful miniature beaded necklace. Her dress is blue cotton dotted calico. Overcoat of brown cotton that has some tears, a hole, and some light blotching. Her underclothes consist of cotton slip with tucks and lace, and cotton pantaloons etched in lace. Some hand sewing and some machine sewing noticed. Overall, this doll is as original as can be found for the time period. Note: The clothes are sewed on, and the body so not visible. However, the body is  muslin, with a narrow waistline and (ladylike body). Most likely stuffed with sawdust. No visible identifying marks found.  Rare to find this kind of written provenance attached to a doll.  Wonderful originality and a must for your collection!
